Many of you will be familiar with the abundance of literacy
resources tailor-made for an incredible amount of different subjects.
Colleagues throughout the land spend so much time quite literally reinventing
the wheel. That is why we decided to create something here at Hodgson Academy
that will have a lasting legacy for literacy, no matter what the subject.
What was paramount was our focus on CONSISTENCY. Yes, that word
again! Transferring those literacy skills can be difficult in a different
classroom, with a different teacher, a different subject and a different
resource. Taking all of this on board, the Learning Centred Leadership Team
began a consultation with all subjects in order to facilitate such a powerful
and lasting resource.
The staff wanted a full range of punctuation devices,
sentence starters as well as the whole school feedback marking codes at their
fingertips to support the consistent approach to literacy success needed for
students. Examination paper command words, sentence stems for a range of text
types, common apostrophe uses also provide a sense of supportive consistency
for colleagues as well as students. With the increasing focus on spelling,
punctuation and grammar in many GCSE subjects, this literacy mat is Hodgson
Academy’s idea of using a resource that is easily recognised by students,
wherever they may be during their school day.
What we particularly liked, was the option to have these
mats fit perfectly on students’ desks, with plenty of room for an open exercise
book in the centre.
