IRIS- a tool for self reflection

By K. Parr, Lead Teacher of Geography

This year the Geography department set itself a double aim:

1. to share their teaching and learning ideas across the department
2. to share IRIS observations to aid with reflection, self evaluation and shared evaluation

Each term, one member of the department has chosen one lesson to be recorded with IRIS. This lesson had a focus, which was shared with the department and all the other members were able to observe the reflection and share their thoughts with the teacher who delivered the lesson.

We learnt a few things from the use of IRIS:
  • That it helped us gain confidence with having people in the room whilst we were teaching.
  • To be proud of the teaching and learning that takes place every lesson in the room.
  • To accept that we are not all perfect but have areas to develop, and instead of seeing this as a negative, use it as a challenge to improve ourselves in our classrooms.
These IRIS recordings have been taken across the year groups, KS3 up to KS4, KPA using it specifically with the Year 11's as a tool to keep them on their toes as we come to the final stages before the exams.

IRIS is often feared across the Academy, considered as a tool that sees us under scrutiny. However our department has realised the importance of being happy to share what we do- positively or negatively in order to improve and challenge ourselves.

Are you going to take the IRIS challenge?
