Stop signs for low level disruption

By K. Parr, Lead Teach of Geography

I have been looking into behaviour management of PP and disengaged boys. One strategy that we are trying out for low level disruption is the use of 'stop signs'. If your lesson is going well and you don't want to stop everything to get a student to get back on task or to stop distracting others, you just place a stop sign on their desk. On the back of the sign it says :

Think about what you are doing- could you be making a better choice?

-Are you paying attention?

-Do you understand the task- if not ASK.

-Are you completing all of your classwork?

The student then is reminded of what they should be doing or how they should be behaving and it gives them a chance to get back on task before a verbal warning is given. This will hopefully lead to a reduction of low level class disruption without the rest of the lesson being interrupted. The aim is to teach students to reflect on their behaviour and this is used at KS4 level (Year 9 to 11).
