Reward tickets- the starting point

By K. Parr, Lead Teacher of Humanities

As we have been developing our CPD project- based on behaviour for learning, we have moved to trialling different methods of positive praise and rewards as a method of reducing disruption to learning. We want to engage and motivate students to behave in class, by rewarding them. During our lessons, the students will be informed about our ‘weekly prize draw’ as seen on our huge posters. Each lesson, if students behave appropriately or exceed expectations in terms of effort and work produced, they will be given a reward ticket (a raffle ticket). The partner ticket will be put in the teacher’s pot and, at the end of the week, the teacher will choose one ticket. The better students behave, the more chances they have to win the prize.

Each member of our CPD group has been equipped with the poster and tickets and now we are trialling this throughout the spring term. This is something that ,we hope, will positively promotes behaviour in the classroom. We will use our own reflections, observations and tally charts filled in to see if the number of rewards increases and the number of consequences reduce.
