Using Pipe Cleaners to Demonstrate Learning

by Matthew Carlisle,
ITT Student, Science Department

After starting a new topic on 'Genes' this week in Science, pupils from Year 8 have been modelling the structure of DNA using pipe cleaners.
These designs represent the two strands in a double helix and base pairs C-G and A-T.
Pupils were in competition with one another to create the best structure and despite many great entries, the winning pupil received an Easter egg for his excellently made 3-dimensional DNA design.

This transfer of knowledge into another medium allowed students to develop and stretch their understanding, as well as adding a kinaesthetic and competitive element to a complicated topic.
