Bringing Independent Research to Life: Tolerance and Respect in R.E.

Aimee King is a teacher of Religious Education at Hodgson Academy. This is her first year with us and she was keen to share how Religious Education can be featured as part of her Year Seven Transition Unit. Here, she shares her new and exciting transition activities recently enjoyed by her Year Seven students.

'My year seven students have completed their transition unit ‘Who Am I,’ and were asked to do some independent research at home. They were asked to research a religious celebrity (anyone from the 6 world faiths : Islam, Christianity, Judaism, Sikhism, Hinduism & Buddhism) as well as their opinions on particular issues.

Using this research, the class progressed by creating a community of ‘people’  - including themselves - and their celebrities. This enabled the students to realise that everyone is unique, having their own differing opinions when it comes to life issues . Being tolerant and respectful in such a diverse community and world was also a quality they could all appreciate during these lessons. The pictures speak for themselves! My classroom is now home to a circular community of paper people!'
