Marking Tool Kits

In the English department, we are always looking for ways to ensure we give quality, valuable feedback in a manageable way. We want strategies that keep the volume of marking in proportion with the level of impact it has on student learning. From this, our 'Marking Toolkit' was born! Laura Parkinson, assistant lead teacher of English, explains what our 'Marking Toolkits' consist of and the impact they are already making in the department.

Pinned behind every teacher's desk in the English Department is a zipped wallet of mighty power! It contains our tips and tricks to personalised feedback. It's available for all, with what's needed and as a reminder to utilise feedback time within lessons too.

The kit contains:

Purple Pens of Progress: Arguably the most powerful tool of all! Students complete their D.I.R.T work in a different colour so it's clear to see. Furthermore, it highlights the power of editing and re-drafting work.

Personalised Progress Stickers: these explain key grammar rules; contain quick activities to complete to practise common mistakes and have a variety of targets for students to work towards.

Verbal Feedback Stamps: following verbal feedback with a student,  these are stamped in exercise books and students complete a 'spider diagram' around it to summarise the feedback they've received. This not only means they can go back and re-read it but is utilised as an assessment for learning tool, showing they've understood.

Sticky Notes of various sizes: a firm favourite in the English department! Used in a 100 different ways in lessons and can be an essential tool in feedback too. From simply pointing out where corrections are needed (and can then be exchanged for Pause Plus Points) to being used for peer assessment: we simply love them!

Green Pens: we mark in green, therefore they are never far out of reach!

Our kit is something that will continue to evolve as we are inspired by new and creative ways to ensure that students receive the feedback they deserve!
