I was keen for students to include ambitious vocabulary
within their descriptive writing. Also, I was looking for a way to ensure that
students were taking care with spelling when copying challenging words from the
board.
That is why I created a starter activity of vocabulary bingo. Students
select 9 words from a topical list on the board and add them to their bingo
card. Words are selected at random and students win a prize for a line then a
full-house. However – they are reminded that if their bingo card is checked and
spelling mistakes are found then their card is void!
Students are then encouraged to include the vocabulary they
have chosen in writing tasks later on in the lesson.
This activity is excellent as a starter to check knowledge from previous lessons and can be used in a large variety of subjects.
