The first topic for Year 7 looks at Geographical skills, the ones which can be used all the way through KS4. Usually, we dive straight into the topic, however, this year, we decided to get the Year 7's comfortable with OS maps. These are maps, which are used each year and the GCSE papers have extracts of them in, to get the students to answer questions and practice skills with.
Stage one: - place the map in front of the students- let them look at it (you may be surprised how the students can loose themselves finding features in their local area!).
Stage two: - questions and answers session on what a key is and why it is needed
Stage tree: - the students are asked to draw around their hand. They must indeed create a hand island with key symbols used with the right colour. They can set their island out however they want, but it must have some kind of structure to it. The aim is not to just draw anything on there.
Stage four: - match the symbols, with a key next to their hand.
All Year 7's have completed this task and they were completely immersed from day one. The hands show that the students take great pride in their work and worked hard to make their island the best.
A great start to the year, and, as you can see- it's something that has produced great results!
