Revision clock

By K. Parr, Lead Teacher of Geography

As an alternate to revision in the forms of mind maps, revision cards, revision guides, we have started to give students time limits to ensure that they cover all topics, rather than just concentrating on one or two.

The students get given an A3 piece of paper with a clock in the middle. The page is then split up into twelve and for an hour lesson, the students have five minutes to revise each section covered in the topic. Now, this only works if you make it clear what the 12 sections are prior setting the task, otherwise students will waste time researching which sections they want to revise.

The timer makes the students more focused as they quickly realise they have to stick to the allocated time in order to complete the entire revision sheet. It also makes them see how quickly OR slowly they are working through their revision. It is a very effective way to cover all sections in one lesson.

Have now a look at the students work- how often do we manage to get them covering an A3 sheet in silent conditions and thus creating a revision guide to take home?
