Vocabulary Treasure Hunt

by Rebecca Bates,
Lead Teacher of Modern Foreign Languages

Students can find vocabulary acquisition a bit repetitive and at KS4, are more reluctant to sing the songs and chant the new language than they did in Year 8.

I printed out new language (in this case, careers and jobs in German) and hid four copies of each word around the room.
Students worked in teams to be the first to collect them all (kind of like an educational Pokémon go!)

As an extension, they then had to correctly match the German with the English meanings. This meant that even if a group found them first, the rest of the class stayed on task in the hope that some answers were wrong!

This worked really well as an engaging starter and a way to cover lots of new language quickly.
