Annotation: An Approach to Understanding Model Examples

by Jacob Merritt,
Teacher of Maths

It can be dismal when a model example has been given, spoken about for several minutes, and then students are bewildered when beginning a similar task. Often when displaying and discussing model examples, students can be unsure about certain aspects of them. However if, after giving a model example, students are given the opportunity to annotate the key steps taken or facts involved, this can allow them to process thoughtfully what is happening in each step. Breaking down steps in this way shows what steps they understand in detail and which they may be struggling with. Performing annotations is a clear opportunity to apply key vocabulary and verbalise methodology.

When it comes to revising topics, students may find it easier to use an annotated example. It can also be advantageous for students to annotate in a different colour to distinguish between the model example and their annotations.
