Often we can find that our best mathematicians will grasp any method taught to them. However what we are looking to develop further is how to identify patterns and to work out questions in an easier way by recognising these patterns or facts.

Often we can find that our best mathematicians will grasp any method taught to them. However what we are looking to develop further is how to identify patterns and to work out questions in an easier way by recognising these patterns or facts.
I did this with Year 8 top set and it made them realise that numbers
can be split up and added/subtracted and rearranged to make complex calculations
easier.
Even if the two fractions didn't bond to 1, we can still ignore
the 7 & 6 and reduce the amount of computation needed to add the fractions.
