Interactive Plenary: James Bond

by David Agnew,
Teacher of MFL
A misleading name as the activity has nothing to do with 007, but younger pupils in Year 7 and 8 really love it! I have used it in MFL but this plenary could also be used in other subjects to recap the learning at the end of the lesson.

It is a great plenary as it does not involve paper or equipment and can test the learning of the entire class if done effectively. I usually ask pupils to pack up first so we can play right until the bell goes.

The teacher chooses a pupil to leave the classroom. Whilst the pupil is outside, a James Bond (boy or girl I hasten to add) is chosen. Once we have identified our James Bond, the pupil who stepped outside then re-enters the classroom and stands at the front. They ask the question “Es-tu James Bond?” and pick pupils at random. The pupil who stepped outside has 5 attempts to try and locate James Bond. Each time they ask the question in the target language.

The catch is that if you are not James Bond (which is practically the case for all of the pupils), you must produce a word or sentence in the target language (depending on ability) learnt during the lesson. If the pupil correctly identifies James Bond in five attempts they win a prize and the pupil chosen as James Bond then leaves the room to guess his or her successor.

When questioning pupils, the same word cannot be used more than once and if there are multiple games, pupils are encouraged to always pick pupils who have not yet spoken.

Stretch and support: It is a very easy activity to differentiate; for more able pupils you can demand more advanced vocabulary or ask them to produce full sentences in different tenses.
