Thinking Hard in Science

by Tom Hibbert,
Teacher of Science

In Science we are trialling (with great success) ‘Thinking Hard’.
The students of 9U4 were met with a science keyword grid, plus an envelope containing a thinking hard plenary (a dominoes game that constantly made associations between keywords). The keyword grid contained words that all the students had met before, however, not all of the words were going to be necessary for the lesson. The PowerPoint contained clues as to what they were going to use the words for. As the clues were revealed, the class would cross out words they deemed unnecessary. (Save or Scrap)
The class had to provide a 6 mark exam style answer to the question ‘How are the reactants and products of photosynthesis transported around a plant?’

The work produced will be used as a starter for next lesson, where the students will have to follow a set of tasks where they highlight the different substances, structures and processes that they have included in their excellent answers.
This task was well received by the class and helped underpin key concepts as well as aiding them in writing extended exam answers.
