Bribery!

How do you engage the disengaged who really don`t care for your subject? I have found bribery helps at lot - a hint of competition generally sparks interest in the most bored at heart.
Giving a positive reward for effort and success boosts the students confidence encouraging them to participate more and to take an active interest; who wouldn’t for a chocolate delicacy?

Rewards in the “Big Up Box”.
Students love getting a prize from the big up box. This is filled with sweets, button badges and toys which they pick at random.
However, they don’t get a hand in the box for nothing. Students may be chosen if they have made an extra effort in lesson or have answered the most questions.

One fun way is to hand out the “cash” the student with the most cash at the end of the lesson get a prize from the box. Cash can be given for answers, for each correctly used key word or definition used, or anything you wish to reward.

I also have the “End of Term Raffle”. For every Pause + Point (merit) awarded, students get a raffle ticket with their name on put into a beaker. More PPPs, the more tickets that go in! One lucky student at the end of each term gets a bonus gift (usually a big chocolate bar). I have often found the students want the raffle ticket more than the PPP.
