Since attending his course in Manchester last year, we have been huge fans of Gianfranco Conti and the 'Chunking' method. (If you don't already follow him on Twitter, I massively recommend it. There are also courses going on this year, as well as his book with Steve Smith Breaking the Sound Barrier.) We trialled using 'chunks' last year with KS3 and KS4 to help sentence structure and accuracy, as well as to improve confidence from our learners.
By chunking the language together, students can start to see patterns and vary their vocabulary without losing the grammatical accuracy.
After positive feedback, we decided to base our redesigned Key Stage 3 curriculum around 'chunks' of knowledge.
We started with topics we thought were relevant and interesting, and then looked at the grammar and how we could build that through KS3.
We then created Knowledge Organisers with three main chunks that everyone would know by the end of the topic.
These chunks form the basis for the language content and have allowed us to sequence our language throughout Years 7 and 8. It's early days, but so far, accuracy is improved and students are more engaged and confident with the new language!
