I have been trying various ways to encourage reading outside of school.
With my Year 9 class, I've set up a competition where it is a race to "Read the World". I originally saw a similar idea on a blog and have adapted it to suit this class and play to their competitive spirit!
For every thirty minutes of reading that they do at home, they get one inch of movement across the map proudly displayed in the classroom. If they fill in a book review, they get to move even further.
The person who has read the most will reach the other side of the world first and receive a prize!
It's been a lovely way encourage reading at home and also to reward those who already read a lot outside of school.
