In Year 7, we cover weather and climate as a topic and
connect this knowledge to the water cycle (which is often covered at primary school and
in science so students tend to have a good subject knowledge of this already.) So
rather than covering the knowledge in depth in lesson, I have encouraged
students to go straight to the application of knowledge.
Students are given a
paper plate and asked to complete a water cycle wheel. This activity gets
students to apply the knowledge of the water cycle in a practical manner. For
students who are unsure of the water cycle, we had resources for recap to ensure
everyone has had the opportunity to understand the water cycle. Some students also had model examples of the water cycle wheels and some
information to help them.
Students enjoyed this practical activity and they
have used them to complete starters and plenaries in following lessons. The
idea of the water cycle wheels came from one of our student teachers who also
used them successfully in her lessons.
