Being practical in Geography

by R. Burnett,
Teacher of Geography

In our Geography classes this term, we have been trying to do more practical based lessons to help engage students and aid their learning.

We have completed a variety of activities from Play-Doh to practising tornado drills. These practical bases activities have engaged students and helped with their understanding.

A good example was with out Year 7 students, who have been studying tornadoes. They looked at hte formation effects, and also how to prepare for tornadoes. As part of the lesson, students practised tornado safety drills where students got under the table. This helped students understand how and why people need to prepare for tornadoes.

Using practical based activities has helped with students' understanding on the topics and also to have some fun!
